Fence Challenge

This is about 7"x10" on a piece of cardboard that I prepared with a couple of coats of Colourfix primer.

It's about half pans and half regular soft pastels. I played around again with the impasto textures, making a different surface in the different areas of the image. I suspect that this is a bit too much of a gimmick. Not sure. But the spiky prickly areas do come forward, which is useful.

Goodmorning! just came over to your Blog from WetCanvas...lovely work you have here.

May I ask about the panpastels. In the beginning you noted that you were not especially fond of them and all the little tools one needs to use...then I noticed that you said you are anxious for the Xtra darks to arrive...

Would you invest in the pans again if you had it to do over? I have a few, but have been trying to decide if I want to get the set...I love the soft pastels but the dust is just not working out very well as I don't have a dedicated area in which to work...

you find the dust a problem with the pans?

thanks in advance...Pam

Thank you for the kind words!!

++ Would you invest in the pans again if you had it to do over? ++
Yes, I would. I enjoy trying new materials and techniques when it comes to pastels. The pans are fun! It took me a while to figure out the applicators, but now I am comfortable with them.

++ you find the dust a problem with the pans? ++ It's impossible for me to answer this unless you tell me what level of dust is "a problem" for you. Some get covered in dust and enjoy the heck out of it. Others literally can't stand to hold a soft pastel in their hand. I tend toward the first type. I love getting dirty!

It's true that the panpastels create less dust dropping down off the support as you paint. It might be because the applicators push the pigment down into the interstices of the support with less waste than standard softies. I don't know!

PM me on WetCanvas if I can answer any more questions! I would certainly be happy to do so.
