El Dorado!

kitsch, n. "The concept is associated with the deliberate use of elements that may be thought of as cultural icons while making cheap mass-produced objects that are unoriginal."

I found it! Ground Zero for Hideous Southwestern Decor Elements! It's called Jackalope Mercado. I was wondering where all the dead cow skull wall sconces came from. Voila!

Are you ready for this: the founder is from West Virginia. There you are!

And I thought Georgia O'Keeffe was responsible for the popularity of the "dead cow skull" (much easier to hang on the wall than the live ones). Now I find out it's a guy from West Virginia. Bummer!

I love the part of the article that says "Jackalope is a home and garden shopping destination that is considered one of the top-five attractions visited by the more than 900,000 tourists to Santa Fe each year." Guess that puts it right up (down?) there with Williamsburg Pottery.
